AFTER: A Pretty Focal Point
The painted fireplace was a happy accident. “Originally, we wanted to restore the brick, but it started bleeding red because of some weird finish applied in years past,” says Erica. “We had no choice but to paint it, which ended up helping tie the whole room together.” Topped with a vintage game, the antique oak trunk provides the perfect patina-rich spot to unapologetically kick up one’s feet.

A large vintage ship painting hangs above a sideboard. “I love seascapes, landscapes, bird prints,” says Erica. “One of my guilty pleasures is to lie in bed for hours and look for art online. You have to put in the time to find the hidden gems.”

AFTER: Layers of Patina
While not an antique, the new farmhouse table feels that way after Erica had it sanded. The walnut bentwood chairs bring a European bistro look. Above, a midcentury Murano glass chandelier adds character without competing with the room’s light and bright palette.

Down came dated wallpaper and ceiling panels to reveal charming planks that came alive with a new coat of paint. Erica also freshened up the kitchen’s existing cabinets with paint, while the original drainboard sink got twirled up with a new bridge faucet. The petite high chair is the same one the homeowner sat in as a child. “One leg of it was broken, but we sanded it down and painted it to blend into the room,” says Erica. “I love items that you can make new but can still make you remember.”

AFTER: A Pretty-Meets-Practical Bathroom
“This room was quite—what’s the word?—cerulean,” says Erica of the home’s outdated bathroom. After a fresh coat of paint and swapping the tile out for beadboard, Erica had the skirted tub restored then painted in a dark eggshell finish. “It seemed wrong to buy a new claw-foot when we had a perfectly beautiful option,” she says. The hardware selection was strategic. “Everyone pays attention to the sink hardware,” says Erica, who accordingly splurged on the faucet by Waterworks and sought out more economical tub fittings on Wayfair. The window trim was painted to match the tub; affordable custom shades offer texture. Black-and-white tile by Fireclay and a new rug from Loloi deliver pattern underfoot.
