How one couple lives on the go without sacrificing the comforts of home in their renovated skoolie

This renovated school bus has all the amenities a couple could need.

“Who would’ve thought moving into a tiny home would give us all this space?” jokes Alisa, who lives full time with her other half, Paul, and their two golden retrievers in a renovated Skoolie. Aside from the ability to park and enjoy the outdoors wherever they go, the couple enjoys plenty of space in their unique home.

Thanks to a smart use of space and clever furnishings, the duo didn’t have to downsize much. Plus, stylish decorations and tons of greenery make the former school bus feel like home.

Alisa’s collection of greenery makes the bus feel like a true home. Their driving console is full of potted succulents. The couple left the original metal ceiling on the bus, so they use magnetic hooks to hang plants (as well as other necessities) throughout.

In the center of the bus, the “hangout zone” features a large industrial-style daybed and a long custom-built sofa. Both can double as sleeping space for guests. A wood stove heats the space, and a flat-screen television provides entertainment at the other end of the couches.

Next to the entry, a DIY table doubles as a dining area and study. The couple created the area using an original bus seat, an Ikea tabletop trimmed to fit, some macrame rope Alisa made and a few D-rings in the ceiling.

“We’re not messing around with our bus kitchen,” Alisa says. Thanks to clever space planning, the couple can cook just as they would in a larger home. The kitchen features a full-sized fridge with freezer, a toaster, slow cooker, oven and stovetop. Simple wood siding creates a rustic backsplash above minimal cabinetry.

Custom-built wardrobes line the hallway leading to the bedroom at the back of the bus. Ample storage hides beneath the comfortable double bed, which sits on a custom-built platform. ​

Alisa’s philosophy is that living tiny does not mean sacrificing a hot shower. Sleek subway tile shines in the walk-in shower fitted with a curtain for privacy.
