How a growing family of four enjoys the luxuries of home in a renovated Skoolie

Paige Volk lives full time with her husband, daughter, new baby and adorable corgi in their renovated Skoolie Bus, Appa. Appa is named after the “sky bison” of the same name on Nickelodeon’s “Avatar: The Last Air Bender.” Like the mythical creature, Appa the bus lets the family fly free around the country and live off the grid.

The couple completely renovated the bus to customize it to their family’s needs. They installed a heated floor, full solar setup, incinerator toilet, tiny wood stove and Japanese soaking tub.

The front of the bus features a combination living room/dining room/master bedroom. How’s it all fit? They fold up the chairs and table which they store in the space between the kitchen cabinet and the bench seat. A Murphy bed across the way folds down to form a “super bed” connected to the couch. There, the sofa acts as a side car co-sleeper for the baby.

The kitchen’s renovations boast all of the attributes of a traditional home: a cooktop, burners and plenty of overhead and under-sink cabinet storage. A Travel Berkey water filter sits behind the sink to provide clean drinking water and reduce consumption of plastic bottles.

Behind the kitchen are the cozy children’s bunks. This setup allows for separation between the kids’ and adults’ sleeping areas for privacy.

A small play area nestles next to the bunks, complete with bookshelves for the children’s favorite reads. It’s hung next to Paige’s Magic Chef washer/dryer combo, which makes laundry a breeze.

The family decided to dedicate a good amount of real estate to the bathroom, which features a roomy Japanese soaking tub. The sink is custom made from a small stainless steel bowl for washing hands and brushing teeth. An incinerator toilet sits across the way for off-the-grid living.
